Dear Editor: Anyone that lives on Coles Street was awakened Friday night about 1 a.m. unless they sleep with ear plugs. What was it? It was large. You heard the rumble of it before it reached your block. It was empty because you heard it bounce on out forever as it rumbled up the street. But the noise. God, it was loud! A friend who lives on Coles, a block or so past mine, asked me the next day if I had heard it. Yes, it woke me up out of a dead sleep. About three weeks ago, Kevin Sulka (director of Public Works) sent a nice letter to this paper thanking me for my concern and implying that a stop sign was "on the way" for the corner of 6th and Coles. Bravo! But where is it? At the beginning of Coles Street there are three signs. The speed limit which everyone ignores, and two other signs. One is a truck with a slash going thru it and another sign indicating the truck route. Is this sign a suggestion? There are too many heavy industry trucks using Coles Street as a short cut to Newark Avenue and also Montgomery. If this sign indicates a law against trucks using Coles Street, why isn't it enforced? Mr. Sulka, could you explain whether this sign is a suggestion or a law? Can't we get these truckers to respect our neighborhood? Respect is the real key word here. Coles Street has a real mix of people from almost well off people to those not as lucky, but still we deserve respect. Anyone with any sense realizes how hard the police in our town work, but can't something be done about this abuse? These trucking companies on the whole aren't even from Jersey City. I know because I watch them as they cruise up our street. Is it a law or what? Wondering and Concerned
